A Devon town is set for a "makeover" after a lengthy road closure due to sewage works earlier this year.

Modbury Parish Council and traders said they had joined forces after recognising the town needed "some TLC" after the road works.

The council explained local businesses and residents had a "collective vision for the town".

Organiser and councillor, Ann Turner said the initiative was called Modbury's Marvellous Makeover.

"We will clean up the town, then we will be doing some painting and planting in the main street," she said.

"It is all part of making the town look good after recovering from the road works which had the centre of the town closed for about six weeks.

"It's important for the traders and the community spirit of the town. People will work together to make the town look and feel good."

Fellow organiser and councillor, Sarah Wyatt added: "We have been looking very closely with the traders. We have been looking at ways to improve footfall through the town.

"They want to have bunting, flowers and other things to make the streets look gorgeous."

She explained the road works were "essential".

"We thought the road works were going to take three months and they managed to find a different contractor who could do it in five weeks which was much better for us," she said.
